Ingersoll Security History
Ingersoll was first founded by both Robert Ingersoll and his brother, who initially founded the now renowned locks company as the Ingersoll Watch Company in New York City during the 1890’s. Initially recognised as Robt. H. Ingersoll & Bro, the company traded from 51 Maiden Lane, Manhattan. The brand first became famous for their production of pocket watches, which had initially retailed at $1, known as the Ingersoll “Dollar Watch” and went onto sell over forty million units.
In the early 1900’s, Ingersoll acquired retail premises and later a factory located at St John’s Street in Clerkenwell. As part of the war effort, Ingersoll Engineering were put to work, creating locks and devices for aviation, with their Y.2. Series Aircraft Locks used on glider tow-line release mechanisms.
The globally recognised and industry leading Ten Lever Ingersoll Mortice Lock was first invented by J.W. Taylor. The mortice lock is now known as the Classic (SC71), whilst the ten-lever mechanism was incorporated into a design for a padlock by Mr. L. Young.
The outstanding abilities of these designers for both the Ten Lever Ingersoll Mortice Lock and Padlock are still in production to this day. Amongst other notable designers was Mr. William Ernest Stubbs (Bill Stubbs) responsible for the M52 range of security locks.
